Facing the man in the red suit

The first time our youngest heard about Santa, she cried.

SOBBED uncontrollably at the thought of a strange man coming into our house while we were all sleeping.

So I told her, there is no Santa. It is just a story. REALLY.

She didn’t believe me. Seriously. I could not convince this child that there was no Santa. I had no idea what to do. We discussed it a lot, and finally I just told her that if she did happen to see someone in our house, late at night, to please come and wake me up immediately. See last year.

This year I asked her if she wanted to see Santa and tell him her Christmas wishes. She said (and I quote) “I like pictures of Santa, but real people dressing up like Santa freaks me out”.

santa3 She did it anyway.

When asked if she wanted to sit on his lap, she politely said “No thank you“. Which was fine with us, because really, it is kind of creepy.

Do your kids like visiting Santa? Do they believe?

ok, this is probably horrible but, our kids know Santa’s not real. They were freaked out by him as very little kids (I also have the Santa picture my mom made my oldest do, she’s sitting on the rocking chair by his feet and her face is so sad!). And I just couldn’t lie to them (that’s what it felt like to me) so we still watch Santa movies and stuff but we just say it’s like Barney or Ninjago or whatever, just fun made up. Although they do know the real stories of the original St. Nick who gave gifts in secret to help people. What’s not good is Josh in particular felt bad for kids who did believe in Santa and wanted to tell them he wasn’t real. We nixed that pretty quickly!!!

    • I am so glad to hear this! I have always struggled with it, and when she was super afraid, I decided to just come clean and say it was a story. Our oldest loves the magic of it, and wants to believe it is real, but she is 14, so she knows.

  2. my little one is afraid of santa… I don’t blame her. I did ask her if she wanted to go see santa but she said no…. that’s fine though!
