Have Wand, Will Travel…to the Movies

As you may know, The Bee and I are HUGE Harry Potter fans. We loved the books so much that each of us has read them several times. All Seven several times (Try and say that 3 times fast).

Going to see the movies are such big events for her (and me). She wears her cape and carries a wand. It is fabulous.

The wand we made together, three years ago, has been through some rough play, and is not as pretty as she’d like.

Not a problem.

We made some new ones!

If you’d like to make one too,

you will need:

Construction paper

Tape (all I had was blue painter’s tape, but any will do)

Hot glue

Tissue paper (or paper towels/napkins/toiletpaper)

Paint

Acrylic clear matte varnish (optional)

So easy to make these and they are so adorable magical.

Originally, I found the tutorial over at dadscando.com, but haven’t referenced it in quite a few years. These have become second nature when we need a quick wand (and who doesn’t?)!

If you’d like to get some inspiration, check out their project page. These are awesome.

On to assembly.

Roll a piece of construction paper tightly into wand shape, and tape.

Next, stuff torn up pieces of tissue paper (or paper towels or napkins) into your tube so that it is packed tightly and feels solid. Careful not to shove too much in at once. Construction paper can tear!

Now, take your glue gun and fill in the top and bottom of the wand.

That looks so cool.

Then (once that has dried a bit) continue down the wand making a design with your glue.

{No, the wands aren’t magically changing colors (although that would be amazing). We did two.}

After all that hot glue dries, coat entire wand with white acrylic paint. I started painting with brown, but then realized it would be better to prime it first, so it looks a bit mixed.

Once that dries, get creative. Paint as outrageously as you want! We coated ours afterward with some acrylic matte varnish to seal it for durability, but this is optional. The paint holds up pretty well on its own.

And then, start playing!

Is that the hand of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named? Totally white enough. Maybe these wands can make the sun come out in the Pacific Northwest!

Or not. But it still looks fantastic!

If you decide to try this tutorial, please let me know!

I showed you my wand… I’d love to see yours! heh.

  1. Fantastic wands!!! I am a huge Harry fan also, I have all the books and like you, have read them several times… I just re-read the Deathly Hallows, and watched Part 1 again on DVD, in preparation for a trip to the movies this coming Friday – I can’t wait!!! How did you guys enjoy the movie? Bet you both looked great! 🙂

    1. Thanks! We loved the movie. Just bring tissues! I cried for half the movie. Not just little tears, but total sobbing!
They left out a few things, but got pretty close. Let me know how you like it!!

  2. I saw it, I saw it!!! I loved it, and like you cried through half the movie 🙂 I think many of my tears were about it being the last one though…. so sad! Still, I enjoyed it.

I put a link to your wands in one of my recent posts here http://krispynoodles.blogspot.com/2011/07/thirty-things-in-thirty-days-week-2.html

I didn’t make one for my venture to the movies, but when my son is older and we can enjoy Harry together, we will make them together for sure 🙂

    1. Yes! I don’t know what I will do now that the series is over:)
Thanks so much for linking to me! You are awesome!
Watch out making those wands, though…you can’t just make one! LOL They are so addictive.

  3. These are AWESOME! Love them! We’re big Harry Potter fans, but we have no kids to share it with yet *pout*

Anyway, I love this project and will be featuring it later today from our linky party 😀 Thanks for joining in the fun!!
